2Way is an instalation of signs, signals, markings, and other devices combined and used to liberate closed areas due to short term/long term construction sites and free their functionality from their confined environments so they may do more than herd the public away from the area(s).
The design and application of “Temporary Traffic Control Parklete Initiation Devices” in work zones should address the needs of all road users that wish to take a break—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, including those with disabilities.
The devices should meet the basic principles of signing to be effective with road users:
1. They fulfill a need.
2. They command attention and respect.
3. They convey a clear, simple meaning.
4. They provide adequate time for a proper response.
The installation consists of multiple seating areas, a public garbage can, space for outdoor greenery, and standing and seated tables. 2Way uses the same language and branding that of the city of vancouver and utilizes their open data to mimic and questions the semiotics of the construction aesthetic as an intervention within the public realm.
All objects of 2Way are made from abandoned or disgarded construction/roadwork sites and have been redesinged and reinstalled into a previously unused public space outside of Emily Carr University that neighbours a continuing city development.
